This article explains how to review your detected metadata and segments in Novus. Metadata provides context about your users, and segments allow you to group users based on that data and their behavior.

Understand metadata and segments

Metadata includes details about the people and companies using your product. Novus categorizes this into two types:

Segments group your visitors or accounts based on specific rules. Novus uses your metadata and product usage to create predefined segments, allowing you to easily target specific audiences.

Review your metadata

You can review the metadata fields that Novus found in your codebase.

  1. Select Metadata from the left menu.
  2. Select the Visitor or Account tab to switch between the two lists of metadata.
  3. Review the listed fields. Each row displays the field name, a brief description, the data type (such as string or integer), and the source location.

What Novus does in the background: Novus actively scans your connected repository, analyzing your authentication tokens, session data, and user profiles. It automatically extracts these metadata fields and maps their data types for you, eliminating the need to manually define each data point.

Review your segments

After detecting your metadata, Novus automatically generates ready-to-use segments.

  1. Select Segments from the left menu.
  2. Review the list of generated segments. You will see predefined groups such as Active Visitors (30d), New Visitors (7d), and Frustrated Users (Rage Clicks).
  3. Check the sync status next to each segment name. A green checkmark indicates the segment is successfully synced, while a spinning indicator means Novus is currently processing it.

What Novus does in the background: Novus uses the detected metadata and expected usage patterns to automatically build helpful target audiences. For example, it identifies your company email domain and creates an Internal Users segment automatically. Novus configures the complex logic for these segments and syncs them so they are immediately available for filtering and targeting.

Next steps

Once your metadata and segments are synced, you can begin reviewing your detected product areas, pages, and click events.
