This article explains how to measure user progression using funnels and journeys. Tracking these paths helps you understand where users succeed and where they drop off.
Understand funnels and journeys
Funnels and journeys help you measure how users navigate through your application to reach specific goals.
- Funnels measure sequential paths. They include two or more specific steps a user must complete to achieve an outcome. Steps can include viewing a Page, interacting with a Click Event, or triggering an Event.
- Journeys measure high-level progression from a start point to an end point. Novus classifies journeys as either recurring (tasks users complete multiple times, like creating a report) or nonrecurring (one-time goals, like initial account setup).
How Novus builds your workflows
You do not need to manually configure your funnels and journeys. Novus handles the heavy lifting for you.
- Novus scans your application to identify meaningful user paths, such as registration flows, checkout processes, and feature adoption sequences.
- Novus automatically determines the exact Pages, Click Events, and Events that make up each step of a funnel.
- Novus categorizes your workflows into groups like Onboarding or Conversion so you can easily organize your data.
- Novus continuously analyzes these paths in the background to detect unusual drop-offs and generate actionable insights for you to review.
Review funnels and journeys
You can view all detected workflows in your product overview. The interface separates your workflows into two sections.
- Funnels display the funnel name, a short description, and the total number of steps. Below the description, Novus provides a visual sequence of the steps, using badges to indicate whether each step is a Page, Click Event, or Event.
- Journeys display the journey name and a badge indicating if it is a Recurring or One-time path. Below the description, you see the exact start point and end point required to complete the journey.
Analyze funnel performance
You can dive deeper into any funnel to see exactly where users leave your application.
- Select a funnel from your list to open the detail panel.
- Review the Overview section to see high-level metrics calculated by Novus. This includes your overall Completion Rate, Total Visitors, Completed users, and the Avg Time to Complete.
- Move down to the Step-by-Step Breakdown. Novus provides a visual chart of user progression. For each step, a light bar represents the users who entered the step, and a dark bar represents the users who successfully continued.
